Marin county Recreation and Leisure

Marin, Home to Abundant Pleasures

The beauty of Marin is inspiring and alluring. The natural environment is rich in resources for recreation and leisure, and the cultural scene reflects this same affluence. Families who are fortunate enough to call Marin home, have many choices to make when it comes to their leisure time. From a vigorous hike up a mountain to seats at the opera, Marin has it all.

Marin’s Natural Beauty
Marin County is home to many parks managed by federal, state and county governments. These landmark parks offer a wide variety of experiences including educational exhibits, hiking, mountain biking, boating and many magnificent views of the Marin landscape. Across the terrain of these parks Marin home owners and families will discover great diversity. There are many miles of wild and scenic coastline to explore – tide pools, great waves crashing against rugged cliffs and sandy beaches perfect for sitting and soaking in the sounds of the sea. The inspiring Pacific Coastline is easily within reach for people who call Marin home, particularly those living in homes in the western part of Marin County.

Running south to north just inland from the coastal environment is a wide swath of redwood forest. Most of this land is protected and not open to development. Again, there are many parks with trails for hiking under the shade of trees that are hundreds of years old. While meandering along paths through the forests, hikers may hear the sound of a bubbling creek or come upon a friendly swimming hole.  In some regions, there is abundant wildlife and rare plant species to be appreciated.

A crown jewel in Marin’s landscape is Mount Tamalpais rising 2571 feet above sea level. Mt. Tam is said to be the birthplace of mountain biking, and dirt trails wind up and down its terrain. There are many trails to wander or climb, some leading to the peak of the mountain where intrepid hikers are rewarded with spectacular views. Mt. Tam is also the site of an annual play that draws Marin families from their homes for a day to enjoy a theatrical tradition that’s almost 100 years old.

Marin’s Blossoming Vines
Marin home owners are also able to spend a leisurely day visiting the county’s own up and coming wine region. The north central part of Marin County has special soil and climate conditions that produce varietals of distinct quality.  Over the last few decades, an increasing number of acres have been planted in grapes, marking a rebirth of winemaking in Marin County. The uniqueness of Marin wines have been recognized by the region being awarded its own appellation.  Many Marin varietals are the result of organic farming and environmentally sound production methods.

Excellent wines are a great addition to dining in Marin County with its many four and five star restaurants. The focus throughout the county is on fresh ingredients and organic produce. People travel from the Bay Area and beyond to enjoy some of Marin’s most touted dining establishments. Fortunately for Marin residents these delicious choices are only a short drive from home.

Cultural Quality
But, there’s even more to Marin County. Creativity abounds and Marin home owners are surrounded by art and culture. No matter what the preference – fine art, music, theatre, film or literary pursuits – people calling Marin home can enjoy cultural choices year around without leaving their parcel of paradise. Because so many creative artists choose to live in Marin County, the quality of life is further enhanced making Main an ideal place to live, grow and thrive.
